Reverse Product Engineering Services

Reverse Product EngineeringThere can be a number of reasons a company may need to determine a product’s chemical or material composition. Perhaps it needs to find a replacement for a material or part discontinued by a vendor. Or it requires information about a part or formulation so it can evaluate a competitor’s product. Whether it’s a molded plastic part, a coating, or a liquid formulation, determining as much as possible about the chemical composition is important in these situations.

Reverse engineering enables the duplication of an existing part by capturing the component’s  physical dimensions, features, and material properties. While the physical dimensions and features  of a part or product can be more straightforward, the material properties often are not. Crane Engineering’s Laboratory Services Group can analyze a product or part to determine the components present and in what quantities.

Reverse product engineering is useful when:

  • the original product manufacturer no longer produces the product and the product needs to be duplicated,
  • there is inadequate documentation for the original design or formulation of a product, or
  • it is necessary to evaluate a competitor’s formulation to determine what chemical components give it its properties.
